BMW brake service: pads, discs, fluid, and warning signs
Published · 1 min read

BMW brakes are sized for the weight of the car and for repeated stops. They also hide wear behind large wheels. A visual glance through the spokes is not a measurement. At Bimmer Town the wheel comes off, the pad thickness is measured, and the disc is checked for a lip, cracks, and runout.
Signs that should not wait
- A brake-pad or brake-fluid message on the instrument cluster
- Grinding, a pulsation through the pedal, or a pull to one side
- A longer pedal travel than the car had a month ago
- Fluid that is dark, or a reservoir level that keeps falling
Pads, discs, and sensors
Pads are replaced in axle sets. If the disc is below the minimum thickness stamped on the hat, or it is grooved enough to eat a new pad, the disc is replaced with the pads. Wear sensors are renewed when they have already triggered, so the next warning is real and not a leftover fault.
Brake fluid
Brake fluid absorbs moisture. That lowers its boiling point and corrodes the inside of calipers and the ABS unit. We change it on a time interval, not only when the pedal feels wrong. After the work the pedal is checked on the road, and any stored brake faults are read before the car is returned.
